That collective sigh that you hear coming from the East Coast is from everyone who was involved in New York’s recent Fashion Week. The fashion industry is not unlike any other billion dollar industry, such as the automotive industry or even the NFL. Everyone from designers, producers, seamstresses, models, magazine editors, lighting and sound engineers, as well as celebrities still have a high level of adrenaline coursing through their veins.
New York Fashion Week is akin to the North American Auto Show where companies exhibit not only what is soon to come to market, but also what is hopefully possible for the future. For engineers, entrepreneurs, and fashion-designers alike, this is a make or break time to promote oneself and possibly become the new hottest commodity in the industry. Fall Fashion Week falls somewhere in between the NFL’s Superbowl and the Draft not only in terms of sequence, but also in function.
If the Oscars are the Superbowl, then Fashion Week is no less important. As soon as Roger Goodell hands the Lombardi Trophy over to some victorious owner does the cycle start all over again. Draft prospects line up in preparation for the Combine in order to secure a top spot on the runway, that is the NFL draft. Yesterday’s heroes are congratulated, but everyone’s mind is already on next year. Who cares about last year’s fashion trends? Next year already takes priority.
Congratulations to all the stand outs of Fall 2013 New York Fashion Week. It could mean everything or just something we happened to see during a New York minute.
