The de Young Museum, The Academy of Art, Smuin Ballet and the Mexican Consulate collaborated in an epic art, fashion, dance show for the City, Friday Septmeber 17th, 2010 to celebrate the 200th year of Mexican Independence and 100th year of the Mexican Revolution. The event’s purpose, to showcase modern Mexico through audiovisual and short films with the accompaniment for fashion and dance!
The show started with proper speeches from the Consulate General of Mexico and moved right into the fashion portion of the night. The Academy of Art allowed several of their young aspiring students to showcase their talents in front of a few hundred patrons. That must have been exciting!
The opening pieces, children’s collection, were produced by Tessa Guerra, MFA Children’s Wear Design and Textile Design. Several pieces after were create in a summer class at the Academy headed by Robert Curry and those students are: Ivette Ayala, Brittany Burggarff, Sarah Didion, Gabriella Dixon, Aki Hasegawa, Tsz Ting Ho, Danielle-ah Nakashima, Amy Nguyen, Joseph Poli, Shi Tang, Cynthia Tran, Eileen Wilson, Shannon Wong. The closing part of the fashion show with the extravagant bead work was created by Maria Korovilas, MFA Fashion Design. Her collection debuted at the Academy of Art University show at Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week at Lincoln Center a week earlier and the show at the de Young was the first time the collection was shown in San Francisco.
I found this portion of the night to be fantastic! I was surprised to learn many of the piece where created over the summer. For those not in fashion design, conceptualizing a garment, getting it on paper, and producing the live piece is not easy, it’s actually very difficult. To have students go through this entire creative process and then getting their work on a runway…butterflies in stomachs and drinks after to celebrate ( for all those over 21 of course)! Good job to all those in the show and please keep up the good work!
Irene from Chillin Productions ( love the name) helped produce the show with her extensive knowledge of how a properly produced show should look and feel. Thanks Irene, I will always come to your events!
The second part of the show were a few dances of the Latin flare by ballet dancers from the Smuin Ballet line. This company is know to produce amazing pieces and their dancers are absolutely incredible. Check out their shows if you can.
